Sumariwalla, 65, has been president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) since 2012. He won the third most votes polled during the WA elections, which were held two days before the World Championships.
He will be in office for four years.
The four candidates who receive the most votes out of the eight candidates competing for the position of vice president are elected to the WA Executive Board, the international body’s highest decision-making body.
The Executive Board is made up of the president, four vice presidents, three appointed members, and a non-voting chief executive officer.
Sumariwalla, a 100m Olympian, has also served on the WA Council since 2015.
