A man in his 40s was killed in a shooting downtown early Monday, Toronto police say.

The shooting happened shortly before 5 a.m. on College Street near Spadina Avenue, according to Duty Inspector Jeff Bangild.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the victim with gunshot wounds.

He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Police have not publicly released the victim’s identity.

Witnesses told police an argument between several people preceded the shooting, Bangild said.

Two people were seen leaving the area northbound on Spadina shortly after the gunfire.

“The descriptions are limited given the time of day this occurred at.” Bangild said.

The homicide unit is now investigating. Bangild noted there are many security cameras in the area where the shooting occurred.

Spadina Avenue was closed from College to Nassau streets for the investigation.
