To determine where Americans work the hardestWalletHub compared all 50 states across 10 key metrics ranging from average weekly working hours to the proportion of workers with multiple jobs and annual volunteer hours per resident.
According to the study, North Dakota and New Mexico They were placed at the extremes of the list of the most working states in the United States in 2023.
“Americans are hard workers, putting in an average of 1,811 hours a year, according to the World Economic Forum. That is 470 more hours per year than the Germans work, but 594 less than the Colombians”, says the report.
According to the site specialized in economic and financial information, even when given the opportunity not to work so hard, many Americans don’t take advantage of it.
And as evidence is the following research data:
Americans left 55% of their paid time off unused in 2022. While leaving vacation on the table may seem strange to some people, there are many reasons why workers choose to do so.
“Some fear that if they take time off they will seem less dedicated to work than other employees, with the risk of being fired. Others worry about falling behind in their work or worry that the normal workflow can’t work without them,” says WalletHub.
Hard work is the key to success, and people in some states understand this better than others.
To determine where the hardest-working Americans live, WalletHub compared all 50 states on two key dimensions: “Direct work factors” and “Indirect work factors”.
Evaluated those dimensions using ten key metrics (Average weekly work hours, proportion of workers who leave vacation time unused, average travel time to work, proportion of workers with multiple jobs, among others), with their corresponding weights. Each metric was rated on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing “hardest working.”.
