A suspected spy accused of fleeing prison by using bed sheets to strap himself to the underside of a delivery lorry has appeared in court to deny unlawful escape.

Daniel Khalife, 21, appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from the high-security Belmarsh jail to plead not guilty to escaping from HMP Wandsworth on September 6. He was wearing a special blue and yellow prison uniform for the hearing.

The former soldier was arrested on a canal towpath in the northwest of the capital on September 9 following a massive police search.

He denied one charge of escape, saying at the Old Bailey: “I am not guilty”.

Khalife had been in Wandsworth awaiting trial after allegedly planting a fake bomb at a Royal Signals
