Stanford football: Scrappy Cardinal comes up just short against Arizona

STANFORD – Stanford played better than last week, when it suffered its second-ever loss to an FCS program, but it wasn’t enough in a 21-20 loss to Arizona on Saturday at Stanford Stadium.
Stanford led 17-14 after three quarters and Arizona QB Jayden de Laura had left the game with an injury. But redshirt freshman Noah Fifita led the Wildcats on a nine-play, 67-yard TD drive on his first possession to put Arizona up 21-17 with 7:42 remaining.
Joshua Karty, who was 26-for-26 on field goals over the past two seasons, had missed a pair of 51-yard field goals earlier in the game. He made a 46-yarder with 3:09 to play to cut the deficit to 21-20, but Arizona (3-1, 1-0) got two first downs on the ensuing possession to run out the clock.
Stanford rotated quarterbacks Ashton Daniels and Justin Lamson throughout the game. But while the QBs each played one half last week, oftentimes they alternated within the same series against Arizona.
Daniels was used mostly on pass plays, completing 15 of 27 passes for 202 yards, while Lamson was used mostly as a runner, with 13 carries for 57 yards.
Freshman Sedrick Irvin got the start at running back and had 66 yards and his first career TD on 10 carries.
The Cardinal (1-3, 0-2) was coming off a 30-23 loss to Sacramento State. It hosts Oregon next week, one of seven currently-ranked teams remaining on its schedule in what is turning into a tough first year for new coach Troy Taylor.
