A Saskatoon man charged with aggravated assault and offering an indignity to human remains in the death of Megan Gallagher is now going to stand trial on the elevated charge of manslaughter.
Thomas Richard Sutherland was supposed to have a preliminary hearing beginning Oct. 3 to see whether there was enough evidence for a trial.
Instead, the Crown and defence agreed to send the case directly to trial.
A date will be set later this month.
Gallagher, 30, was reported missing on Sept. 20, 2020. During their investigation, police received information that Gallagher had been killed in a garage at 709 Weldon Ave., prosecutor Tyla Olenchuk said. Further witness statements indicated Gallagher had been tied to a chair and killed in a back room.
Three people who dumped Gallagher’s body in the South Saskatchewan River in September 2020 have been sentenced for offering an indignity to human remains. One more person faces a similar charge.
Four people are also charged with first-degree murder. One of those four — Robert James Thomas — has been committed for trial so far.
