The area from Cross Guns Bridge to Doyle’s Corner in Phibsboro remains sealed off this morning, with traffic very heavy as a result

The 67-year-old woman suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a silver Honda which was travelling at high speed as she and her husband were crossing the road.

The incident has been referred to the Garda watchdog for investigation because it is understood the vehicle had been briefly pursued by a Garda traffic unit vehicle shortly before the incident.

The car was recovered a short time after the incident at nearby Avondale Road, Phibsboro, with significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.

The car had not been stolen and gardaí are this morning trying to establish who was driving it.

There have been no arrests in the case which is being investigated as dangerous driving causing death, with the speed the car was travelling at being considered a major factor.

The Garda traffic unit had been involved in a short pursuit of the car which lasted “just a matter of seconds” before the woman was struck as she attempted to cross the road, a source said.

The hit-and run victim’s husband was walking with the woman when the collision happened and is “very lucky not to have suffered serious injuries or worse” in the incident, according to a source.

The couple have been living in the Glasnevin area and it is understood the man retired from the gardaí well over a decade ago.

It is understood the Honda was being driven dangerously when it came to the attention of gardaí.

The car, which was travelling from the Glasnevin/Ballymun area, came at speed through the junction at Cross Guns Bridge and was overtaking cars when it hit the woman.

The crash took place at about 9.10pm on the Phibsboro Road near the Bald Eagle pub on the stretch of road between Cross Guns Bridge and Phibsboro Shopping Centre.

The road remains sealed off while forensic collision investigators carry out examinations.

Investigators are now trying to establish the exact circumstances of the fatal incident.

Traffic in the area is extremely heavy this morning as the area between Whitworth Road and Phibsboro Shopping Centre/Connaught Street is sealed off, with only some traffic allowed through. Gardaí are directing inbound traffic down Whitworth Road, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Gardaí said they are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

“Any road users with camera footage (including dashcam) who travelled in the Phibsborough area between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Wednesday 4th October 2023 are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí,” they said.

“An incident room has been set up at Mountjoy Garda Station.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mountjoy Garda station on 01 666 8600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”

In a statement, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission said: “GSOC received a referral from An Garda Síochána on the night of Wednesday 4 October, following a road traffic incident in the Phibsborough area of Dublin.

“The referral was made by a Garda Superintendent under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.
