Cambridge Memorial Hospital says surgeries and endoscopies will resume Thursday after a fire Tuesday afternoon forced the cancellation of those procedures.

A fire broke out on the roof of a mechanical room in Wing B, which was mostly unoccupied and currently under renovation. Wing B was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The fire caused smoke and water damage. Cambridge Fire Department estimates the damage to be at approximately $1 million.

“The smoke can travel, it’s a lot easier for it to travel so once it gets into the foundation, the walls and ceiling and the floors — and it travels through air vents — that can increase the dollar value of the damage,” John Percy, fire prevention officer with Cambridge Fire Department told CBC News.

Percy said the cause of the fire is not yet known and the investigation continues.
