With or without Guillermo del Toro, Titans of the Pacific – 71% were going to have a sequel. Fans of the first film would have preferred that the Mexican director return to the new project, but he did not do so, and that is how Titanes del Pacífico: La Insurreccion originated. 45%, with Steven S. DeKnight in the direction and the main performances of John Boyega and Scott Eastwood, without so many links between one adventure and the other, in addition to a marked difference that distanced the public from any chance of becoming a great success .

10 years have passed since the release of the original film and people are still talking about it. Recently, Del Toro published a survey on the X platform to ask his followers if they would go see the re-release of the film for his tenth anniversary. He obtained more than 20 thousand votes, and a few days later it was confirmed that Collider joined the project, as well as Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. for a special screening in IMAX 3D format with a panel in which the director participated, on October 5.
It was during that conversation that he revealed extremely interesting details such as what he thinks of the sequel to his film and the reason why he did not return to the project. There he admitted that he has not seen Titans of the Pacific: The Uprising, and said it would be like watching a movie at home with his ex-wife. This is what he said (via Discussing Film):
I didn’t watch the final movie because it’s like watching movies at home with your ex-wife. It is terrible if it is good and worse if it is bad, or just the opposite. You don’t want to know. So I didn’t see it. I read the final script and it was very different. Some of the elements were the same but very different.

In the same panel he revealed the reason why he was not the director of the sequel, and it was due to a conflict involving a film set. Del Toro explained that they had to cancel the value of some “stages” located in Toronto until a specific date or they would lose them and not be able to use them for a few months. In the end, payment was not made and they could not film there. The rest of the team was willing to move to China after what happened, but the director said that he couldn’t because he had to work on The Shape of Water. 92%, the Oscar-winning film.
Why didn’t Guillermo del Toro direct Pacific Rim 2?
We were getting ready to do it, it was different from the first one, but it had a continuation of a lot of the things I was trying to do. So what happened is, I mean, that’s why life is crazy, right? They had to give a deposit for the sets at 5pm or we would lose the sets in Toronto for many months. So I said, “Don’t forget we’re going to lose the sets,” and it was five o’clock and we lost the sets. They said, “Well, we can film in China.” And I say, “What do you mean we?” (Laughs) “I have to go do The Shape of Water.”
Pacific Titans cost US$190 million and grossed US$411 million, including an impressive US$114 million in China alone. The sequel cost $40 million less and earned just $290 million worldwide. This did not affect the potential of the franchise, and Netflix knew how to take advantage of it with an animated series, Pacific Rim: The Black, which ran for two seasons. A few years ago it was mentioned that depending on the success there would be a third film, but now those plans may not be the same. However, it has been mentioned that there are other projects in development, so it would not be unreasonable to find a sequel, spin-off or series in the future. Maybe not so soon, but we could see a new expansion of the franchise at some point; although probably without Guillermo del Toro involved.
