A youth was sent to the hospital after his lower leg was broken while being arrested by Winnipeg police, the province’s police watchdog says.
Officers were patrolling near 300 Magnus Ave. in Winnipeg at 12:50 a.m. Thursday when they saw two young people they believed had a weapon, the police service told the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.
When the officers stepped out of the vehicle, the two ran away, police told the IIU, which investigates serious injuries involving police and sent out a news release about the incident on Friday.
The officers caught up with the two, who are both younger than 18, and started arresting them, but one of them tried to flee again. When police tried to stop him, he was injured, police told the IIU.
The youth, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula — two bones in the lower leg — was taken to Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg police told the IIU about the injury on Thursday.
Anyone with information or video footage that may help is asked to contact the investigative unit toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
