Internet defends dog who’s caught stealing soup: “Totally innocent”

The internet has rushed to defend a pet dog named Sophie who’d cheekily stolen some food from her owner. A viral social media video, which has been viewed more than a million times since it was shared to TikTok on October 8, showed the dog being caught red-handed as the house’s food thief after appearing before her owner with sauce splattered across her snout.

The video’s creator, Stephanie Pennington, had shared under the post that the video had been filmed in 2021 and had gone viral in the same year too. Pennington re-shared the funny video to her TikTok account knowing it would generate the same amount of laughs.

“On this day 2 years ago, Sophie’s ‘who ate the soup video’ went viral,” Pennington wrote under the post.

Pennington describes herself as being a “dog mom” to five pups on her TikTok account. The large family live in Houston, Texas.

How Should You Train Your Dog?

Since the vast majority of dogs love food, it’s vital that owners train their dogs to restrain themselves when they are around foods that they shouldn’t be eating. However, this is easier said than done because training a dog to follow complex commands when around food is no simple feat.

The U.K.’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) writes online that all training for dogs should be reward-based, and that the dog should receive a treat or toy that they are known to enjoy after following a command correctly. The positive reinforcement will instill in dogs that they will receive a valuable prize after following their owner’s orders.

Owners without a toy or treat at hand are encouraged by the RSPCA to reward their obedient pups with praise.

“Giving your dog something they really like—such as food, toys or praise—when they show a particular behavior means that they’re more likely to do it again,” the RSPCA writes on its website. “It’s important to find out what your dog really likes and what their favorite things are. Favorite treats are often small pieces of meat or cheese. The better the reward, the more your dog will enjoy training and learning!”

The animal welfare organization also suggests that owners aiming to train their dogs minimize the distractions around them when training them, and be patient with them to take their time learning new tricks.

“Always start lessons for new tricks in a quiet room in your house away from any distractions,” the organization writes. “Break training up into short but regular sessions so your dog isn’t overwhelmed, just like us, dogs all learn at different rates so don’t worry if your dog doesn’t pick things up straight away.”

What Do the Comments Say?

Since it was shared to the social media platform on October 8 by @Stephanie_0417, the TikTok post has been liked by over 254,000 users and commented on more than 1,300 times. Plenty of TikTokers have shared their amusement at the viral moment in the post’s comments section.

“She was probably fighting off whomever was stealing your soup,” one user joked.

“This case is impossible to solve,” another user added, joining in on the fun.

A different user commented: “She said yes, absolutely did that. Tasted so damn good.”

“I love that she isn’t scared of you after doing something she should not have,” wrote another TikToker.

Other users have rushed to defend the dog for nabbing the soup while her owner wasn’t paying attention.

“Totally innocent,” one user wrote, while another added that the dog had been “framed”.
