16-year-old killed, three others wounded in Oakley party shooting

OAKLEY — A 16-year-old was shot and killed and three others were wounded outside a house party in Oakley on Saturday night, police Chief Paul Beard said.

Officers first arrived at the home on the 400 block of Shannon Way at about 10:45 p.m. to investigate a noise complaint. An 18-year-old woman who lived there told police she was trying to shut down the party, but teens kept showing up. Officers left after she declined their offer to help break up the party, Beard said.

About a half hour later, about 20 to 30 young people showed up at the house, witnesses later told police. With the front door locked, the group entered a side gate to gain entrance to the house’s backyard. Soon after, screams could be heard from inside the home, and several teens began running out the front door, police said.

Five to six shots were then fired in front of the home, killing the 16-year-old and wounding three others, who were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. They were being treated for non-life threatening injuries, Beard said.

The teenager killed has not yet been identified.

“No parent should ever have to receive the news that happened last night and live through the horror of losing a child,” Beard said in a social media post. “This is very much of a ‘no rest until an arrest’ approach for our investigators and officers.”

The shooter fled the scene, Beard said, and as of Sunday morning, neither they nor the weapon they used had been found. Police believe there was only one shooter.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Oakley Police Department at 925-625-8060 and advise the dispatcher they have information about the shooting on Shannon Way.
