Yaw Akuoko-Fremtong said he’s “very sorry” for losing control of his car.
Asked what happened, he said: “I simply don’t know.”
Just before 6pm tonight, the 69-year-old drove into the entrance of Achari Lounge in Rumbridge Street, leaving a gaping hole in the wall.
Rubble and bricks were left scattered on the floor by the restaurant bar.
Speaking from the scene, which was cordoned off by police and fire crews, Mr Akuoko-Fremtong said it was the first time he had driven the blue Volkswagen Golf, having just taken his BMW to a nearby garage.
“It’s the first time I had (the car),” he said.
“I simply don’t know (what happened).
“Just before I reached the crossway I had to stop.
“Before I knew it, the car has hit the wall.”
“I tried to pull the hand brake before I realised I had hit the restaurant,” he added.
At the time of the crash, Mr Akuoko-Fremtong was alone in the car and was driving back to his home in Eastleigh.
He remained at the scene to speak to police and apologise to restaurant owner Bahar Mozumder.
“It was not my intention,” he said.
“I was shocked, I was shaking. I’m calming down now.
“I’m very sorry about it.”
Mr Mozumder, 48, said the accident was “very dangerous” but “luckily we are all safe”.
The restaurant, which only opened at the start of August, will stay open while the wall is repaired.
