Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate after an officer with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) shot and killed a man in St. Catharines, Ont.
NRPS said in a media release officers were called to a home on Melody Trail near Arthur Street around 9 p.m. Monday.
Police say there was “an interaction” between uniformed patrol officers and a man that led police to shoot the man.
Paramedics tried to save the man but he was later pronounced dead, police say.
NRPS said it is investigating the incident, as is the provincial watchdog — the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates police conduct that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
Police say the SIU is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.
