Yes, it’s a mediocre 60s Teen movie, and yeah, the drag sequence has been mentioned on the HAMB in recent years (though rarely), but I’m brining ‘Bikini Beach‘ back up with you again anyway. Why I’m sharing the video below is because this particular clip has been uploaded in a very high resolution, and contains the complete drag racing sequences from the film (along with the hammy ‘bikini walk’ opening sequence). Watching this Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello classic again, I had forgotten that this flick also stars stand up funny man Don Rickles as ‘Big Drag’, and the possibly familiar face of John Ashley, who also starred in Dragstrip Girl (1957) and Hot Rod Gang (1958)… Not to mention Ashley went on to produce ‘The A Team‘ in the 1980s!!
Back to Bikini Beach: Watch the racing sequences and notice the admirable work they did shooting the many, many amazing drag cars in action. Cameras are obviously mounted in the vehicles facing forwards and behind, but the tracking shots from a car running next to the dragsters are great too. ‘TV’ Tommy Ivo brought 2 feature cars to the film, including his four Nailhead dragster, plus you’ll see Don Garlits’ in Swamp Rat VI, Don Prudhomme driving the Greer-Black-Prudhomme ‘Freida’, Dean Jeffries’ ‘Manta Ray’, and many more…
