Volkswagen’s first electric wagon teased

With the upcoming Volkswagen ID.7 Touring nearing production, the Wolfsburg-based firm has released the first official teasers of the brand’s first ever electric wagon.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the production ID.7 wagon in the flesh, though, with a largely undisguised prototype filmed in June this year.

In addition to the pair of official teaser images you see here, Volkswagen has announced a few details about the ID.7 wagon.

Firstly, it will be known as the ID.7 Touring. That’s a break from tradition, as most Volkswagen wagon models have been given the Variant name.

Despite the Touring’s extended roofline, the car’s aerodynamics haven’t been completely ruined. The liftback has a 0.23 coefficient of drag, while the upcoming wagon is slightly worse at 0.24.

Luggage space in the boot is said to be 545L, measured up to the height of the seat backs, when the rear seats in place. Fold them down and total load space grows to 1714L.

The ID.7 liftback is 4961mm long, 1862mm wide, 1538mm tall, and rides on a 2996mm. From what we can tell, the wagon should around the same length, and rides on the same wheelbase.

In time the ID.7 Touring will likely be available with a choice of single-motor rear-wheel drive, and dual-motor all-wheel drive drivetrains.

At present, though, the ID.7 liftback is currently available in Europe in rear-wheel drive with a 210kW/545Nm electric motor.

There are two battery packs available: a 77kWh unit good for 615km of range using the WLTP testing standard, and a larger 86kWh pack that’s said to be capable of 700km between charges. DC fast charging speed tops out at 200kW.

Equipped with the 77kWh battery, the ID.7 liftback has a 0-100km/h time of 6.0 seconds. The wagon should be in the same performance ballpark.

Volkswagen has already confirmed there will be an all-wheel drive GTX version of the ID.7 liftback with a total power output of 290kW.

The ID.7 Tourer will be revealed in full in 2024, and will be built in Emden, Germany alongside its liftback sibling. When it goes on sale in Europe, the the ID.7 Tourer will complement the ninth-generation Passat.

Revealed in August, the latest Passat is available with petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. Unlike earlier generations it will only be offered as a wagon.

The new Passat has been ruled out for Australia, although there’s been no confirmation either way for the ID.7 liftback or wagon.
