A Catholic nun’s discovery of water called the ‘miracle in the mountains’

GOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) — A lot of good things happen in the Colorado outdoors: hiking, camping, spending time with family and even a miracle.
Chances are you’ve seen the white statue on top of the hill overlooking Interstate 70. It is the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and it’s on the property that belongs to the Mother Cabrini Shrine.
On that property is where the “miracle in the mountains” happened thanks to Frances Cabrini, better known as Mother Cabrini.
“Mother Cabrini came to Colorado because of the Italian immigrants that were here,” said Capuchin Franciscan Father John Lager.
In 1902, Mother Cabrini founded the Queen of Heaven Orphanage for girls in Denver. She soon realized the girls needed more room, so, Mother Cabrini looked toward the mountains.
“She bought this property here at the shrine, which was not a shrine at the time. It was just bare land,” said Lager.
The property was perfect, except for one thing.
“There is no water on this property, and she said, ‘It’s not really a big deal, I think the Lord will provide,’“ Lager said.
Mother Cabrini’s fellow sisters noticed some damp rocks and called her to see for herself.
“She (Cabrini) used her cane to strike the rock, and the spring has flowed ever since,” Lager said.
So has the constant flow of visitors from around the world.
“I think they come primarily, number one because it’s a shrine to Mother Cabrini, the first American saint. I think they come also because they have a need just to find a place for peace,” Lager said.
The Mother Cabrini Shrine is open year-round to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Visitors come to see the source of the miracle, and believers come to pray and drink the cool, clear spring water to quench their thirst and to quench their souls.
