Shane MacGowan has given NFL star and Taylor Swift’s new boyfriend Travis Kelce the seal of approval for his rendition of The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York.
The Kansas City Chiefs player recorded the song for the Philadelphia Eagles Christmas album, changing some of the lyrics to create the ‘Fairytale of Philadelphia’.
He teamed up with his brother Jason Kelce, a player for Philadelphia Eagles, to create their new single and raise funds for charity.
It has since shot to the number one spot on iTunes.
The pair described the rewritten track “as a tale of two brothers whose love for each other withstands the test of time”.
The Pogues frontman McGowan shared the clip to social media, adding: “Tell them I am knocked out.”
His wife Victory Mary Clarke also praised the athlete, sharing the video of Kelce in the studio with the caption: “Well done.”
It comes after the pair shared a “massive thank you” to fans as
remains in hospital.
He was admitted to hospital in June and is currently undergoing treatment for a serious blood infection.
Earlier this year, Clarke told the Sunday Independent that she hoped to have her husband home for Christmas.
He has been visited in hospital by stars such as Bruce Springsteen, Bono and the Edge, Damien Dempsey and Daniel O’Donnell.
