Akwa United FC returned to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Remo Stars Sports Club on matchday-nine of the 2023/2024 NPFL season. SportsRation reports.

The Promise Keepers began the game in the relegation zone and with a single win after eight weeks.

The pre-game pressure on Akwa United FC was compounded when Sikiru Alimi fired the Sky Blues ahead at the Eket Stadium after 15 minutes.

Akwa United FC responded in excellent fashion as midfielder Dare Ojo headed home a cross from Akintunde Bala in the 23rd minute.

Uche Collins completed the comeback for Coach Fatai Osho tutored Akwa United FC with a powerful shot from inside the Remo Stars area in the 26th minute.

The first half ended 2-1 in favour of Akwa United FC, relief for Fatai Osho’s men.

Akwa United did extend their lead in the 62nd minute after good work from Akintunde Bala was finished off by substitute Rilwan Sadiq for 3-1.

Home-boy Aniekeme Okon who was introduced for Remo Stars just before the third Akwa United goal did score for the Sky Blues to set-up a tensed finale quarter.

Former Flying Eagles star, Aniekeme Okon headed past Akwa United FC goalie Badmus Nurudeen in the 78th minute for 3-2 at the Eket Stadium on Sunday, November 19.

The midfielder refused to celebrate the goal against his former club a sign of respect for a club that took him from then NNL side Akwa Starlet during his teenage years.

Akwa United FC held on to seal their second NPFL win of the 2023/2024 season as it finished 3-2.

The Promise Keepers have now won twice in the league and will again hope the latest victory signals a turnaround in the club’s fortunes.
