ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Albany Pine Bush Preserve performed the second prescribed burn of the year on Monday. Crews burned about 11 acres near Route 155 and Washington Avenue Extension.
Prescribed burns help prevent invasive species from taking over the habitat and reduce the risk of wildfires. Crews undergo special training and keep a close eye on the weather.
“How many days since rain? What are moistures like? We actually monitor fuel moistures out in the field so we know the probability of ignition, how the fire is going to spread.”
Officials try to burn as many areas as possible each year but can only do as much as the weather allows.
