Named the ‘Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road’ after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the South Mumbai Coastal Road has been inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on March 11. This new project, which aims at enhancing connectivity and reducing travel time between Worli and Marine Drive, has become the newest attraction of the city.

The construction of the new ‘Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road’ commenced back on October 13, 2018. The coastal road project spans 53 kilometers and is slated to extend from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to Dahisar.

This project is being executed in phases, with the first phase opening the southbound carriageway from Worli to Marine Drive. This particular phase, stretching over 10.5 kilometers, aims to significantly reduce travel time, cutting it from 40 minutes to a mere 9 minutes.

Features of the new South Mumbai Coastal Road

The coastal road boasts impressive infrastructure, including four lanes on each side and two remarkable 12.19-meter diameter tunnels spanning 2.07 kilometers in length. Notably, it is the first four-lane coastal road in India, constructed entirely on reclaimed land from the sea and supported by monopiles exclusively.

The project is not only about improving connectivity but also aims to mitigate environmental impact. BMC civic chief Iqbal Singh Chahal highlights that the coastal road is expected to lead to an annual saving of nearly $100 million in carbon emissions through fuel efficiency.

Usage Guidelines for South Mumbai Coastal Road

The newly opened stretch of the coastal road provides convenient entry and exit points for motorists. The entry points will be on Worli Seaface, Haji Ali interchange, and Amarson’s interchange points, with exits at Marine Lines, particularly at the Princess Street Bridge. However, certain usage regulations have been put in place to ensure safety and efficiency.
