Arsenal suffered a slip up in the Premier League title race after falling to a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates to Aston Villa.
Two late goals from Leon Bailey and Olie Watkins secured the win for Champions League-chasing Villa.
A win for Arsenal would have seen them usurp Manchester City at the top of the log.
City occupy top spot on 73 points, two points ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool who are second and third respectively.
Villa, on 63 points, maintain fourth place and are three points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.
Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has now done the double over Arsenal.
Bailey opened the scoring in the 84th minute as he pounded on a low cross from Lucas Digne after he was left unmarked.
With three minutes left Watkins doubled the lead as he ran on to a long pass from Youri Tielemans before volleying past David Raya.
Earlier on Sunday, Liverpool also missed the chance to temporarily go top after losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace at Anfield.
The Reds went into the game on the back of a heavy 3-0 loss to Atalanta in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday.
Eberechi Eze was the hero for Palace as his 14th minute strike secured the three points.
