DENVER (KDVR) – The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office released the autopsy of Christopher Ward, a 34-year-old man who died several days after he was bitten by his pet Gila monster.
In February, medical crews responded to an animal bite call and found Ward hardly responsive in his bed after his venomous pet lizard bit his hand for four minutes.
Ward was bitten on the evening of Feb. 12, but he wasn’t treated right away. According to the autopsy, Ward went in and out of consciousness for almost two hours before calling 911.
When medical crews arrived, they found Ward hardly responsive in his bed and immediately took him to the hospital.
Ward was in the intensive care unit suffering from anaphylactic shock, respiratory failure, renal failure and many other factors. Three days after he arrived at the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
The autopsy reported that Ward’s death was an accident due to complications from the Gila monster venom.
The day after the man was bitten, Lakewood Animal Control officers went to the home and removed two Gila monsters with the assistance of Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Lakewood police said the reptiles have been taken to a wildlife rehabilitation facility.
