Barnsley have been thrown out of the 2023-24 FA Cup after they fielded an ineligible player during their First Round replay win at Horsham.
Nicky Cadden’s third minute goal plus John McAtee’s first-half brace saw the Tykes win the replay comfortably away at Horsham, following a 3-3 draw at Oakwell in the initial tie.
Barnsley however fielded an ineligible player during the replay and the FA has consequently opted to throw the League One club out of this season’s tournament.
In a club statement, Barnsley clarfied that the ineligible player was due to an “adminstrative error” and that they “fully cooperated with the investigation and has accepted the FA’s decision.”
Barnsley also confirmed that they’ve made contact with Horsham and issued a message of thanks for the seventh-tier club’s “understanding and cooperation throughout this process.”
The following apology was also made to Barnsley fans plus club players and staff: “We would like to apologise to our fans, players and staff for this regrettable error.
“This mistake – although unintentional – falls way below the high standards we set at this club and is simply not what you deserve. We have already conducted a full internal investigation and have subsequently put safeguards in place to ensure this will never happen again.”
Horsham Chairman, Kevin Borrett meanwhile issued the following statement on behalf of the club: “The Barnsley Chairman Neerav Parekh contacted me on Friday 17th November to make the club aware of the administrative error and FA consideration of the matter.
“I understand the immense disappointment that this decision by the FA would be to both Barnsley Football Club and its supporters. On behalf of HFC, I wish Barnsley FC every success in their pursuit of promotion back to the EFL Championship at the end of the 2023/24 season.”
Horsham will now head to Sutton United on Saturday 2 December at 3pm GMT in the Second Round, following their reinstatement into this season’s competition.
