The Burlington Canal Lift Bridge is undergoing construction and closed as of Tuesday until March 20.

There will be signs to direct traffic along alternative routes as workers replace the deck on the Burlington, Ont., bridge, Public Services and Procurement Canada said in a news release.

The bridge spans the canal between Burlington and Hamilton on the southwest tip of Lake Ontario. Having opened in 1826, the canal has long been a busy commercial waterway.

According to the Government of Canada website, the 116-metre-long bridge, which opened in 1962, carries two lanes of traffic across the canal.

It closes regularly in winter, operating between March and December and can be raised over 30 metres to allow marine vehicles through. It lets about 6,500 boats through each year, according to Public Services and Procurement.
