Magical Lagoon has claimed last place in the 2023 Melbourne Cup after passing the finish post a long way back from the front-runners.

The five-year-old wasn’t expected to finish towards the front with only two other horses considered bigger outsides by Sportsbet.

Before the race, Magical Lagoon was paying a fixed price of $126 to win and $26 to place.

Magical Lagoon was jockeyed by Mark Du Plessis and trained by Chris Waller.

Right You Are failed to finish after pulling up at the 200m mark but is said to be OK.

The horse appeared to suffer heat stress in the closing stages of the race but was cooled down with ice water in the pre-parade area.

The horse has reportedly returned to the stalls and been cleared by vets.

Gold Trip was the winner at Flemington, followed by Soulcombe in second and Sheraz in third.

The favourite, Vauban, finished in 14th place.
