AN energy expert has shared her top seven ways to save money during the holidays.
Her advice included how to light up the home without being wasteful during the festive season.
Catherine Storer, Executive Director at ESS, shared her hacks for lowering energy bills.
First, she recommended LED Christmas Lights for the holiday season.
“LED lights are not only more energy-efficient, consuming up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs, but they also have a longer lifespan,” she said.
“This switch not only reduces your energy bills but also lessens the need for frequent replacements,” she added.
Second, she recommended using timers to avoid lights staying on too long.
“Make use of timers for your lighting and decorations,” she said.
“By setting timers, you can make sure that your decorations light up only during the peak viewing hours, typically from dusk till your bedtime.
“This simple step avoids energy wastage during the late-night hours when fewer people are likely to enjoy the displays,” she added.
She also included draft-proofing the home and making sure it is well-insulated.
“Before the holiday season begins, check for drafts around windows, doors, and other openings. Use weather stripping or draft excluders to keep the warm air in,” she said.
“Ensuring your home is well-insulated can make a significant difference in maintaining a comfortable temperature without over-relying on heating systems,” she added.
Her fourth tip included paying attention to energy-efficient cooking strategies.
“Slow cookers are one of the most energy-efficient methods of cooking, using the same amount of energy as a standard light bulb,” she said.
She also recommended installing a smart thermostat for the home.
“Smart thermostats are a game-changer, they offer precise control over your home’s heating, allowing you to program temperature settings based on your daily schedule,” she said.
“This means you can lower the heat when you’re asleep or out of the house, and have it comfortably warm when you’re home, ensuring energy is used only when needed,” she added.
She also shared that gifting eco-friendly items may encourage others to save money as well.
“The holiday season is a perfect opportunity to encourage energy-saving habits,” she suggested.
“Gifting items like rechargeable batteries, solar-powered chargers, or energy-efficient appliances can promote a more sustainable lifestyle.
“Even gifts like a high-quality thermal flask can reduce the energy used in repeatedly boiling water,” she added.
She also recommended making full use of any outdoor lighting.
“With festive lights already adding a cozy ambiance, you can often reduce the usage of regular lighting,” Catherine said.

“This not only creates a festive atmosphere but also cuts down on electricity usage.
“Where possible, use natural light during the day and rely on the glow of your Christmas decorations in the evenings,” she added.
