St. John’s councillor-at-large Debbie Hanlon has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently in hospital, receiving chemotherapy.

A post made Monday morning on Hanlon’s real estate Facebook page states that Hanlon suddenly fell ill last week and has since been diagnosed with an “aggressive form of cancer.”

The post did not specify what cancer she had, but said she is receiving quality care in hospital.

“Debbie is still admitted to the hospital and will be for the immediate future. The chemo treatment has been intense but so far she is responding well,” said the post.

It also said that Hanlon will be stepping away from her responsibilities on council and from her real estate business.

“For the time being, while Debbie focuses on healing, her council duties have ceased and her real estate business is being run by her rock-solid team,” the post stated.
