Charges laid in ‘unusual’ fatal Huron County crash: OPP | CBC News

Two people have been charged in an unusual two-vehicle collision in Huron County that claimed one life late last year, said Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
The drivers of both vehicles face charges of operating a vehicle while impaired in the Nov. 5 crash that killed a 45-year-old Brockton resident in Howick Township.
Police said first responders arrived on the scene to find both vehicles heavily damaged. A passenger of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene.
“I’ve been a police officer in Huron County for over 25 years and I cannot remember a time where both drivers were impaired and were involved in a collision together,” said Const. Craig Soldan. “It’s concerning.”
Both drivers had their blood drawn and tested following the collision, Soldan said, and while it’s unclear which drugs they were allegedly impaired by, the charges against the two involve cocaine, methamphetamine, and psilocybin.
A 32-year-old man from South Bruce has been charged with dangerous operation causing death and possession of cocaine, among other things.
The other driver, a 45-year-old woman from Hanover, has been charged with possession of methamphetamine and psilocybin, the hallucinogenic compound found in magic mushrooms. Later, that same driver was charged with possession of over 30 grams of dried cannabis, police said.
“With all the different types of drugs available, and you throw in cannabis as well, we’re finding more people are impaired [on the roads],” Soldan said, adding that specialized drug recognition experts have been employed by police to deal with the rise of impairment.
“If anyone suspects that someone is under the influence [while driving], please call 911. We want to hold that person accountable. It’s happening far too often.”
