EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man was arrested near the U.S.-Mexico Border Friday in connection with a homicide that happened in El Cajon last week, El Cajon Police said Monday.
Around 3 a.m. on April 9, police responded to reports of a possible assault in the 100 block of W. Main Street in El Cajon.
Officers found an unhoused man, later identified as 41-year-old Robert Mansi, with critical blunt force trauma injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene and authorities later ruled the incident as a homicide.
On Friday, around 2 p.m., U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents detained 37-year-old John Paul Campbell, who is also homeless, as he attempted to cross into the U.S. at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
El Cajon Police detectives took him into custody and booked him into the San Diego County Central Jail for murder.
Records showed Campbell had previously been arrested by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department on Feb. 15 for assault with a deadly weapon, the release said. He also had an “extensive” history of violent crimes dating back to the early 2000s, according to police.
Campbell was released from jail about seven hours before the homicide on April 9 occurred and was on probation at the time.
The investigation is ongoing and the motive behind the homicide is unknown at this time.
