Esther the Wonder Pig has died. She was 11.
Esther’s owners Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter announced on social media that she died in her sleep Wednesday.
“The day we all wished would never come has arrived. Esther has passed away. She was calm and peaceful, and fell asleep with her dad Steve by her side,” a post on Esther’s Facebook page said.
“Even though Esther is no longer physically with us, her memory and legacy will live forever.”
Esther lived at the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary in Campbellville, Ont. Jenkins and Walter adopted her in 2012 thinking she was a micro pig, but she grew to 260 kg, almost a metre tall and nearly two metres long.
In 2017, Esther fell ill and a fundraising campaign kicked off to purchase a large animal CT scanner that is located at the University of Guelph.
The sanctuary had exceeded its campaign goal, raising more than raised more than $750,000. Money not used for the CT scanner was used to create an emergency medical fund for other sanctuaries.
Jenkins and Walter said on Facebook they are going to take a break to process the news of Esther’s death.
“While we understand many of you will have questions, and we will have the answers for you , but we are going to take a little break to process the situation,” the post read.
“Sending love and happy thoughts to each and every one of you. We know you all loved her just as much as we did, and we thank you for that.”
