A firefighting helicopter crashed while responding to a brush fire in Riverside County on Sunday night.
The crash happened in a remote area near Pipeline Road and Apache Trail in Cabazon around 7:30 p.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The Morongo Casino Resort & Spa is located about a mile away from the crash site.
Reports show the chopper may have collided with another helicopter in mid-air, but that detail has yet to be confirmed.
It’s unknown how many people were inside the chopper, what injuries they may have sustained or whether any fatalities occurred. KTLA reported from the scene where crews from the coroner’s office were seen arriving, however, no deaths have been confirmed so far.
Fire crews were battling a 20-acre fire called the Broadway Fire at the time.
The helicopter was a crew contracted with CAL FIRE to fight fires across the state.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are unknown as details remain limited. Crews from CAL FIRE and Riverside County Fire are responding to the scene.
The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation.
