India’s five most stolen cars: Swift to Creta
[ad_1]
Back in 2021, it was reported that Delhi was the number one city for car thefts. Every 12 minutes, a car was reported stolen in the capital city of India. Recently, another report revealed that out of 1 lakh cars stolen, 56 percent of thefts were reported in Delhi. With so many thefts, a question comes to mind: which cars in India are the most stolen? If you also have this question in your mind, you’ve come to the right place. Here is the list of the top 5 favorite cars of thieves in India.
Maruti Suzuki Swift
The first vehicle on this list is the Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback. This should not come as a surprise to anyone, as the Swift is the most popular hatchback sold in India. Over the decades, the Swift has been the favorite vehicle of thieves. The main reason is that there are too many of them on the road, making stealing and remaining discreet very easy. Recently, the company unveiled the newest iteration of the Swift at the Tokyo Motor Show in Japan. Most likely, the new Swift will be launched next year in India.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR
The second spot on this list is taken by Maruti Swift’s sibling, the WagonR. Just like the Swift, the WagonR is also one of the most popular hatchbacks in India. It has been on sale since 1999, and since then, Maruti has sold 3 million units of this model. Once again, like the Swift, its popularity has made it attractive to car thieves as well. Currently on its third generation, the WagonR is still achieving strong numbers, and earlier last year, the company showcased an E20 fuel-ready variant of this model. Additionally, reports of an all-electric WagonR have been circulating for a while now.
Hyundai Creta
The best-selling mid-size SUV in India, the Hyundai Creta, has been the segment champion for a long time now. So, it should not come as a surprise that it is also present on this list. The only different thing about the Creta on this list is that it is not here for its resale value, which, by the way, is very strong. It is on this list because of its spare parts. Most Cretas that are stolen are dismantled, and their spare parts are sold separately. Many people obtain these used parts at a fraction of the cost, which is why it is one of the most popular cars for thieves in India. Spy shots of the upcoming Hyundai Creta have started surfacing on the internet, and reports have suggested that the launch could be very near.
Hyundai Santro
The Hyundai Creta is followed by another Hyundai product, the now-discontinued Santro hatchback. Just like the Creta, the Santro is also popular among car thieves in India because of the demand for spare parts. The Santro, as mentioned, has now been discontinued, so people steal this hatchback for its parts and sometimes even for resale. The last generation of the Hyundai Santro was discontinued back in 2022 due to lackluster sales. The generation before it was discontinued in 2015.
Honda City
The fifth vehicle on this list is the immensely popular midsize sedan from Honda Cars India – the City. The first generation of this popular sedan made its debut in India back in 1998, and ever since then, its popularity has only gone up. Currently on its fifth generation, the Honda City, in addition to the naturally aspirated petrol engine option, also comes with a more efficient Hybrid system. The Honda City eHEV comes equipped with a 1.5L petrol hybrid engine and a CVT transmission. This engine produces a maximum of 126 PS of power and 126 Nm of torque.
