Giants suffer slew of injuries to players not expected to make team

It looks as if the Giants are going to have to dole out some injury settlements for players who otherwise were not expected to make the team.
During a brutal first quarter Saturday night, in their 32-24 loss to the Jets in the preseason finale, they lost four players in the first 15 minutes and seven overall.
Cornerback Zyon Gilbert was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Safety Bobby McCain was evaluated for a possible concussion and also ruled out.
McCain was hit with a blindside block by wide receiver Randall Cobb, who was penalized for an illegal hit.
Rookie receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton was knocked out with a knee injury.
The Giants were hoping Ford-Wheaton could develop into a special teams player as he acclimated to an NFL offense.
Tight end Chris Myarick also left the game, with a hand injury.
Cornerback Gemon Green went down with a shoulder injury.
With 10 minutes to go in the second quarter, the cart came out to get fallen guard Wyatt Davis, who sustained an ankle injury.
He was in the locker room afterward wearing a boot on his right foot.
Rookie safety Gervarrius Owens, the seventh-round pick, also was forced out with a strained hamstring.
“We had a lot of guys go down, so I thought the coaches did a good job of just trying to scramble, put some stuff together where we were,’’ head coach Brian Daboll said. “We were out there with four linebackers and three DBs. We were teaching a linebacker to play a safety spot. I’m proud of those guys.’’
RB James Robinson, facing an uphill battle to make the roster, ripped off a 28-yard run in the second quarter.
Robinson ran for 1,070 yards as a rookie with the Jaguars in 2020, but is deep down the Giants’ depth chart.
Graham Gano is still good.
The kicker drilled a 57-yard field goal in the second quarter, added a 40-yarder in the second quarter and a 56-yarder in the third quarter.
WR David Sills finished strong with six receptions for 81 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown.
Several Giants players dealing with injuries were not in uniform: CB Cor’Dale Flott, S Nick McCloud, CB Aaron Robinson, LB Cam Brown, DL Ryder Anderson, TE Tommy Sweeney, RB Gary Brightwell, WR Wan’Dale Robinson and OL Jack Anderson.
It appears Wan’Dale Robinson is getting close to returning from his right ACL reconstruction, and it will be interesting to see if he will be activated for the start of the season.
If he is not, he must miss the first four games.
A month ago, Saquon Barkley reported to Giants training camp and finally came to an agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $11 million, with the $900,000 in possible incentives all contingent on him hitting certain rushing, receiving and touchdown totals and the Giants making the playoffs.
Saturday, another of the NFL’s top running backs finally joined his team.
Josh Jacobs and the Raiders agreed on a one-year contract for a base value of $11.8 million, with the deal worth up to $12 million.
Barkley, who rushed for 1,312 yards in 2022, did not want to miss training camp and did not miss a day. Jacobs, who led the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards, missed all of camp.
