Gunmen attack travelling Sunshine Stars bus on Benin-Ore expressway

The travelling team bus of Sunshine Stars FC has suffered attack by gunmen along the Benin-Ore expressway on Thursday, December 7, 2023.
In a statement, the club’s media officer, Michael Akintunde, confirmed the attack along the Benin-Ore expressway, which has left players and officials seriously injured.
This incident comes few days after Nigeria National League club, FC ONE Rocket suffered robbery attack on their way-back from a league match.
The statement from Sunshine Stars announcing the unfortunate attack read ” It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that our team was attacked few minutes ago along Benin-Ore Expressway.
“The horrible incident happened to the team as they were on their way to honor an Elite League tie against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.
“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack.
“Also, our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured.”
The Sunshine Stars official noted it took the intervention of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) officers, who rescued and took the injured officials and the individual shot to a nearby hospital.
Akintunde called on Nigerians and football lovers to join them in prayers for the injured contingent.
In a chat with SPORTSRATION moments after the attack, one of the Sunshine Stars Fc players narrated how horrible the attack seen was.
He said the robbers shot at their bus severally in a bid to halt their movement but the driver kept sail until a safe location where injured persons received urgent medical attention.
No comments has been made by the League board per the incident and status of their weekend fixture.
