For a limited time, the City of Hamilton is making it cheaper for those 17 and under to use public pools, gyms and arenas.

Until Oct. 31, or as long as supplies last, the city says it will sell booklets of 10 tickets to a scheduled drop-in swim, gym or skate session.

These seasonal passes for children ages two to 17 will cost $12.95 including tax.

According to Hamilton’s recreation website, it usually costs $27.73 for a youth clip card of 10 visits to a drop-in swim or gym session. There are no non-seasonal youth clip cards available for drop-in skating.

Passes can be purchased at:

  • Ancaster Rotary Centre

  • Bennetto Community Centre

  • Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre

  • Dundas Community Pool

  • Huntington Park Recreation Centre

  • Norman Pinky Lewis Recreation Centre

  • Stoney Creek Recreation Centre

  • Valley Park Community Centre

  • Westmount Recreation Centre.

In a news release, Mayor Andrea Horwath called this “a wonderful Halloween initiative that encourages kids to stay active.”

Research has shown Canadian children’s physical activity declined early in the pandemic, with children from lower income families having relatively fewer opportunities to exercise than those from wealthier families.

The federal government recommends children aged five to 17 exercise about an hour a day, noting fewer than 40 per cent of kids do that.
