Tyre burst on Honda City causes it spin and crash into Jazz: Live dashcam footage

India witnesses one of the highest numbers of accidents globally. Many of these accidents occur due to inadequate vehicle maintenance. An incident on the Lucknow – Agra Expressway exemplifies how neglecting proper tire maintenance can result in a severe accident.

The incident was captured on the dashboard camera of a Honda Jazz hatchback. The footage depicts the Jazz cruising at a moderate speed in the middle lane of the expressway. Suddenly, a Honda City attempting to overtake the Jazz loses control and collides with the hatchback. Subsequently, the City spins out of control and obstructs the Jazz’s path. The Jazz collides with the City once again before coming to a complete stop.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage. Remarkably, despite this high-speed collision, the occupants in both vehicles remained unharmed.

The City lost control due to a tire blowout. While we cannot ascertain the exact tire condition and factors like tire pressure, using old tires or failing to maintain proper pressure can lead to such issues.

The saving grace in this accident is that both the Honda Jazz hatchback, as well as the Honda City are cars reputed for their build quality and structural strength.

Tyre bursts are extremely dangerous and we have come across many cases where sudden tyre bursts causing vehicles to lose control and crash. The entire thing happens too quickly and drivers often get very little time to respond. On fast highways, they could easily lose control and crash into or jump over the median, fall off the road, crash into other vehicles or trees or even roll over at speed, potentially leading to fatal injuries or deaths.

How to avoid tyre bursts

Tyre bursts can instantly cause the driver to lose control if the vehicle is at high speed. Here are a few tips that can help avoid such situations:

  • Regularly inspect the tyres: Always check the tyres for any cuts or signs of wear and tear. Make sure the tyres have a minimum of 1.5 mm tread depth, as this provides grip to the vehicle.
  • Observe speed limits: Never exceed the speed limits. These limits are set to ensure the safety of drivers on the road. It is important to remember that concrete surfaces can heat up the tyres more quickly than tarmac surfaces.
  • Be cautious with SUVs: SUVs and high speeds do not go hand in hand. Due to their high ground clearance, SUVs have a tendency to experience more body roll and are more difficult to control during high-speed turns.
  • Maintain proper tyre pressure: Always keep the tyres inflated to the optimum pressure recommended by the manufacturer. Under-inflated tyres can heat up quickly, while over-inflated tyres may not provide adequate grip and can result in skidding.
  • Avoid overloading: Overloading a vehicle can put undue pressure on the tyres, increasing the risk of a tyre burst. Make sure to follow the recommended weight limits for your specific vehicle.
  • Take breaks on long journeys: Driving long distances in hot weather without taking breaks can also increase the risk of a tyre burst. Make sure to take regular breaks to allow the tyres to cool down and reduce the chances of a blowout.

What to do during tyre bursts

If a tyre burst occurs, it is important not to panic. Slamming the brakes abruptly will cause the car to lose control. Instead, make gentle inputs to the steering and brakes to help the car go in a straight line. Additionally, gently accelerating the car after the tyre burst can help maintain a straight trajectory. Once this is done, try to gradually bring the vehicle to a stop. Remember to stay calm and focused during this situation to ensure the safety of yourself and others on the road.
