Hur defends Biden classified documents investigation

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – A House committee grilled the former special counsel Tuesday who investigated President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
Robert Hur concluded the president should not face criminal charges but sharply criticized his memory.
“Partisan politics had no place whatsoever in my work,” Hur told the committee.
But reaction to Hur’s work is split down party lines. Democrats, like U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, (D-Calif.), attacked Hur for calling President Biden “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” in the report.
“You understood when you made that decision, didn’t you, Mr. Hur, that you would ignite a political firestorm,” Schiff said.
“The report about the relevance of the president’s memory was necessary and accurate and fair,” Hur said.
Republicans, like U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, (R-N.J.), were quick to contrast Hur’s case with the separate case against former president Donald Trump, who is facing criminal charges related to his handling of classified documents.
“An example, again, of the Justice Department being weaponized against conservatives,” Van Drew said.
Hur’s report detailed the differences between the two U.S. Department of Justice cases, including how President Biden fully cooperated with law enforcement while Trump did not.
U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, (D-Calif.), drew the same conclusion.
“It’s clear that these cases are not the same,” Lofgren said.
U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, (R-Ohio), could not be convinced.
“Joe Biden broke the law,” Jordan said.
But shortly after the hearing ended, White House spokesperson Ian Sams got the last word.
“The president is innocent,” Sams said. “And that was the conclusion of this case.”
The next hearing on Trump’s classified documents case is Thursday in Florida.
