Instagram limits political content on feeds, Meta announces

(KRON) — Meta – Facebook and Instagram’s parent company – announced efforts to reduce political content recommendations on its feeds. Now, the only way to continue receiving political content recommendations is by manually signing up for them.

“People have told us they want to see less political content,” Instagram announced in a blog post in February, “so we have spent the last few years refining our approach on Facebook to reduce the amount of political content you see.”

Instagram said it would roll out the changes “slowly over time,” though it did not specify when. According to a report by NPR, Meta started making changes this week.

In its original blog post, Instagram phrased “political content” as “potentially related to things like laws, elections or social topics.”

According to Instagram, these “social topics” will still be accessible with the political accounts one already follows, but will no longer be recommended to users on public platforms like the Explore page, Reels, or Suggested Users.

Professional accounts can check whether their content will be eligible to be recommended through checking their account status. From account status, Instagram says users “can request a review if they disagree with our decision, or stop posting this type of content for a period of time, in order to be eligible to be recommended again.”

If people still want to see political content recommended to them, there will be a control for people to choose to see it. Here’s how:

  • Go to your Instagram profile and tap the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner to open the “Settings and Activity” tab.
  • Scroll down to the “What you see” section and click on “Content preferences.”
  • Open the “Political content” page and turn on the “Don’t limit political content” option.
