Jaguars QB Lawrence has high ankle sprain, expected to return this season

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered a right high ankle sprain in Monday’s 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, head coach Doug Pederson told reporters Tuesday.

There is no timetable for Lawrence’s return, but Pederson did not rule him out of the Jaguars’ Week 14 game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Lawrence sustained the injury late in the fourth quarter with the game tied at 28-28.

Left tackle Walker Little stepped on Lawrence’s ankle on a third-down play, causing him to twist it as he was sacked. Lawrence tried to get up, but dropped to the ground, ripped off his helmet and threw it in disgust.

It ended an otherwise stellar night for Lawrence, who completed 22 of 29 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score.

Backup quarterback C.J. Beathard completed 9 of 10 passes for 63 yards in relief of Lawrence. Beathard put the Jaguars in position for Brandon McManus’ 40-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. But he couldn’t do much after the Jaguars won the toss and took the ball to start the extra frame.

If Lawrence is out, the Jaguars could elevate Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke from the team’s practice roster to be Beathard’s backup.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Christian Kirk has a core muscle injury and is expected to miss “some time,” Pederson also said.
