President of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales was at the centre of a controversial moment during the World Cup final trophy presentation after he was seen embracing and kissing Jennifer Hermoso.

A dominant Spanish performance was capped by Olga Carmona’s superbly worked first-half goal, but the scoreline hardly did justice to the dominance enjoyed by a side which came into the tournament in a state of disarray.

Hermoso enjoyed a superb tournament herself, but missed the chance to put the contest beyond doubt with 20 minutes remaining when her penalty was saved by England goalkeeper Mary Earps.

Fortunately for the Pachuca forward, her error went unpunished as Spain closed out the victory and secured their maiden World Cup crown.

While the players celebrated wildly afterwards, it was notable that controversial manager Jorge Vilda was ignored by the players he had coached to a landmark triumph.

Shortly afterwards, having received her medal, Hermoso had been preparing for the trophy presentation before she was grabbed by Rubiales who then planted a kiss on her lips and then patted her on the back.

Asked about the incident afterwards, the 33-year-old said on Instagram: ‘Eh, but I didn’t like it.’

On what remains a Spanish victory clouded in a measure of controversy, Rubiales congratulated the players and hoped they would be greeted as heroines when they return home from Australia.

He said: ‘I am very proud of the team, of Jorge and his staff, of all Spanish football. It is an unforgettable day for me.

‘Support the players on Monday night in Madrid, they are heroines.’
