Stray cattle and dogs have been a common cause of accidents on Indian roads. We have witnessed numerous instances, and here is another incident that occurred in Karnataka. The accident involved a Kia Seltos and a buffalo, highlighting how dangerous it can be.

The incident was captured on a dashboard camera, which also recorded the vehicle’s speed. The footage reveals the Kia Seltos traveling at approximately 110 km/h on a four-lane highway. The car was in the right lane, with its high beam headlights on. After covering some distance and overtaking a few other cars, a buffalo suddenly appeared in front of the Kia Seltos.

Unfortunately, the driver of the Seltos had limited options. Despite attempting to apply the brakes, the car’s high speed made it difficult to regain control. The Kia Seltos collided with the buffalo at a high velocity. While the dashboard camera footage does not depict the aftermath of the crash, the owner of the Seltos mentioned that the vehicle lost control and rolled three times before falling off the road.

Photographs show a completely wrecked vehicle, with significant damage to the pillars and roof. It was an extremely severe crash. At the time of the accident, the owner and their family were traveling on NH50. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all passengers were wearing seat belts.

Stray cattle problem in India

Stray cattle pose a significant problem on highways in India, and unfortunately, not enough has been done to address this issue. A few years ago, officials in Uttar Pradesh attempted to increase visibility of stray cattle at night by attaching high reflective tapes to their horns. However, no further action has been taken to remove these hazards from the roads.

To ensure safety, it is crucial to drive defensively on Indian roads and exercise caution when overtaking. It is essential to have a clear understanding of the road ahead before attempting to pass another vehicle. Numerous documented incidents in the past have shown that reckless overtaking can lead to serious accidents, particularly on the unpredictable Indian roads.

There is no way you can avoid such accidents. One can either travel during the day to ensure more visibility or can driver at a slower speed to ensure maximum reaction time in such situations. Other than that, there is nothing much commuters and motorists can do.
