S.J. should implement
Mahan’s homeless plan

Re: “Time for blame game on homelessness to end” (Page A13, Oct. 1).

Mayor Matt Mahan’s commentary about housing solutions for the unhoused is the epitome of “common sense solutions,” a campaign slogan he used in 2022 that is on target today. My family strongly supported Matt’s homegrown vision for a San Jose that works stridently and compassionately for all.

Mahan says there are enough resources to build secure individual cottages or casitas on public lands to house the homeless. He writes that is exactly what was done after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. Let’s begin today on his vision.

Dumping PG&E a
good idea for San Jose

Re: “Riling PG&E, San Jose OKs electric utility” (Page B1, Oct. 5).

I was happy to hear that San Jose is having a study to start their own electric utility. PG&E is much too expensive.

The citizens of San Jose are paying for PG&E’s mistakes. If I could, I would quit being a customer of PG&E. Every month the charge seems to increase a few fractions of a cent.

The PG&E union has it all wrong. San Jose would have those workers join the city of San Jose employees union. There would not be any jobs lost.

PG&E only cares about making an excessive profit. San Jose would respond a lot faster in fixing problems with their own utility.

Congressional chaos
is hurting Americans

Re: “McCarthy ousted as House speaker” (Page A1, Oct. 4).

Clearly, this nation is being ruled by extremism. To pass any type of meaningful legislation in the U.S. Congress requires an act of divine intervention.

Where is the equal representation of all Americans in terms of numbers and ideologies? Why do we insist on maintaining draconian rules established 300 years ago? Rep. Matt Gaetz is a byproduct of our two-party system. Gaetz, a narcissist who’s relishing his moments of fame and power, is currently holding Congress hostage.

The system is broken and detrimental to the welfare of all Americans. We can do better than this.

Republican Party
is simply a cult

Re: “McCarthy ousted as House speaker” (Page A1, Oct. 4).

The MAGA heads in the House of Representatives have beheaded Kevin McCarthy and our Congress is in chaos. So I have a question for congressional Republicans: Why are you still a Republican?

The ideals of the legacy GOP of 10 years ago must be considered in deciding how to govern ourselves. But that GOP no longer exists. It is a Donald Trump cult. They may think that by endorsing him as their standard bearer, they may acquire power and be able to enact the policies they think are important. But Trump has no interest in good governance. He is a lying gangster and is using their support to further his personal ambitions.

Admit that the GOP of old no longer exists and either start a new party or become a Democrat.
