Mahindra Thar outsells Maruti Jimny in October 2023: 3 Thars sold for every Jimny

Earlier this year, Maruti Suzuki put an end to a lot of speculations and anticipations by unveiling the five-door version of the Jimny in India. Ever since the curtains fell from the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, it has been compared extensively with the Mahindra Thar. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny went on sale in June 2023 at a starting price of Rs 12.74 lakh, which many believed was quite high for a compact off-roader. Now, we have the head-to-head sales figures of both the Jimny and Thar to date, and it appears that the Thar has remained unaffected even after the Jimny hit the showroom floors.
In October 2023, Maruti Suzuki shipped 1,852 units of the Jimny, while Mahindra dispatched 5,593 units of the Thar – nearly three times the number achieved by the Jimny in the same month. Maruti Suzuki launched the Jimny in June, and since then, it has shipped 14,456 units of the compact off-roader. On the other hand, in the same five-month period, Mahindra dispatched 26,125 units of the Thar, which is significantly ahead of the Jimny.
While the sales of the Mahindra Thar have maintained a clear lead over the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, a couple of factors are accelerating this lead. Firstly, the Thar, offered by Mahindra, comes with both petrol and diesel engine options across its lineup, unlike the Jimny, which is only available with a petrol engine. Secondly, while the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is offered with a four-wheel drive layout as standard, the Mahindra Thar is available with both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The rear-wheel drive version of the Mahindra Thar also allows it to have a lower starting price point compared to the Jimny.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is available with the 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated K15B petrol engine as standard. It is offered with both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission options, with this engine producing 105 PS and 134 Nm. On the other hand, the Mahindra Thar is offered with a more powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that generates 150 PS and 320 Nm. This engine comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions, along with an option of a 6-speed manual gearbox in the four-wheel drive version.
The Mahindra Thar range also offers two diesel powertrain options – a 1.5-litre 118 PS diesel engine with a 6-speed manual transmission in the rear-wheel drive version and a 2.2-litre 130 PS diesel engine with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission options in the four-wheel drive version.
