PACIFICA — Hours after a man was killed and a woman was injured in a stabbing Thursday in Pacifica, the suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Officers were called to a residence in the 200 block of Naomi Avenue around 7:45 a.m. for a report of domestic violence, the Pacifica Police Department said in a news release. The visit was the second in a week.
At the home, officers found a man and a woman suffering from apparent stab wounds, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to a hospital. An update on the woman’s condition was not immediately available.
The suspect left the residence on foot following the stabbing, police said. Officers searched the area for the suspect but did not find him. Police said nearby Vallemar Elementary School was placed on a temporary lockdown “out of an abundance of caution.”
Around 1:45 p.m., the California Highway Patrol located the suspect’s vehicle in Mendocino County, police said. The suspect, identified by police as 46-year-old Jason Gillenwater, was found near his vehicle dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police said an investigation determined Gillenwater obtained a firearm in Colusa County following the stabbing.
Officers were previously called to the Naomi Avenue home at 9 p.m. on Dec. 14 for a report of domestic violence involving Gillenwater and the woman, police said. Gillenwater was arrested and booked into San Mateo County jail, but he later posted bail.
Officers secured a gun violence emergency protective order and seized firearms and ammunition from the residence, police said. They also obtained an emergency protective order that prohibited Gillenwater from contacting the woman or coming within 100 yards of the home.
It was not immediately clear how the man who died was related to the woman and Gillenwater. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office will release his identity after it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and keeping the family members and Pacifica community close in our hearts as they cope with this profound loss,” Pacifica police Chief Maria Sarasua said in a statement Thursday. “I am grateful to our San Mateo County allied agencies, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol for their assistance during this investigation.”
