Social media is like a double-edged sword, with both positives and negatives. Unfortunately, many people tend to misuse this platform for gaining publicity. We’ve witnessed individuals performing stunts on public roads, causing inconvenience to other road users. Most of these stunts involve vehicles and often result in accidents. People undertake such stunts solely to create videos for social media platforms and gain attention. Recently, an incident occurred in the National Capital where a man hanging out of a moving autorickshaw collided with an innocent cyclist on the road. The video of this incident surfaced online, prompting police action against the culprit.
Times Now shared the video on their Instagram page. It was recorded on the helmet camera of a biker who was trailing behind. According to the footage, the accident occurred in North Delhi’s Signature Bridge area. The video depicts an autorickshaw traversing the busy bridge with a person dancing to loud music playing inside. It remains unclear whether the man was performing for social media or just having fun.
The rickshaw dangerously passed a Tata Ace pickup before swerving to the left lane. The person hanging out of the rickshaw was facing the biker, waving his hand, and dancing, oblivious to his surroundings. As the autorickshaw moved forward, an innocent cyclist was pedaling slowly in the same lane. There was enough space between the auto and the cycle; however, the person hanging out failed to notice the cyclist.
The biker can be heard shouting a warning about the cyclist in front. Unfortunately, by the time the man turned, he had already collided with the cyclist. The cyclist lost control and fell on the road. The biker stopped immediately, but the auto driver fled the scene without stopping. The cyclist likely suffered minor injuries.
The auto driver’s reckless behavior, exacerbated by the person hanging out of the vehicle, worsened the situation. Ideally, they should have stopped and checked on the cyclist’s condition, but instead, they chose to flee. The video quickly went viral, prompting police involvement. With the aid of CCTV cameras installed across the capital, the police managed to trace the auto’s owner.
A senior police official stated, ‘The autorickshaw in question and its driver, Shiva of Ghaziabad, have been traced by traffic personnel of the TPR Circle.’ The officer mentioned that the driver was issued a challan for reckless riding and operating the auto without a license. Commercial vehicles and autorickshaw drivers are required to possess a commercial license. The autorickshaw used in the stunt was also seized by the police.
We have seen several videos in the past where social media influencers have performed stunts for the sake of publicity. We are not sure whether the man hanging out of the rickshaw was also doing something like that. Whatever may the reason be, he was definitely putting his own life and life of other road users at risk. He could have easily hit his head on any other vehicle that was passing through the road and get serious injury as he was not looking at the surrounding.
