Maple Leafs’ Jake McCabe exits game vs. Red Wings after taking puck to face

For a team looking to stay healthy ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Saturday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings was not an ideal night for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Shortly after forward Bobby McMann was ruled out for the game with a lower-body injury, defenceman Jake McCabe was rushed to the team’s locker room after taking a puck to the face.

It was an unfortunate break for McCabe, as the defenceman was trying to block a shot and had the puck run up his stick and catch him under the visor. McCabe dropped to the ice before he was immediately rushed off the ice covering his face with a towel.

McCabe didn’t play Thursday against the New Jersey Devils as he was given a maintenance day.

In 71 games this season, the 30-year-old defenceman has 8 goals and 20 assists. The Maple Leafs acquired McCabe from the Chicago Blackhawks ahead of last season’s trade deadline.

While not official yet, the Maple Leafs are most likely headed for a rematch of last year’s second-round series with the Florida Panthers in the opening round of this season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Panthers clinched home-ice advantage in Round 1 on Saturday with a win over the Sabres.
