DENVER (KDVR) — Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, along with city council members, sat down Tuesday night for their weekly meeting. This week’s topic focused on gun violence in Denver.
Johnston said his goal is to reduce gun violence by 20% in 2024, and that plays hand-in-hand with targeting both youth violence and hotspot areas within Denver.
During the meeting, Johnston listed five locations that are now “Place Network Investigations.” They will be targeted to reduce violent gun-related crimes.
The locations are:
- East Colfax Avenue and Verbena Street
- Paco Sánchez Park
- 800 Block of Oneida Street
- 47th Avenue and Peoria Street
- Mississippi Avenue and Raritan Street
Within those locations, Johnston said he will work with community members to learn what they think needs to be done to reduce crime. He said from there, the city will work with other agencies to make the proposed changes happen.
Johnston explained that environments can impact how people act, and it could be something as simple as more streetlights or educational activities for both adults and teens to keep crime down.
The mayor said he also wants to work on interactions with police when it comes to response times to crimes.
Other city council members from different districts chimed in during the meeting for feedback on the Place Network Investigations.
The next steps within the “Safe Denver” plan will be to start hosting community meetings throughout the city to get feedback from residents.
