2024 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Review: Prices, Specs, and Photos

[ad_1]

What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class? What does it compare to?

The SL is the perfect car for a Sunday drive. It’s a svelte 2+2 convertible that competes with the BMW 8-Series, Porsche 911, and Chevrolet Corvette.

It’s a great everyday sports car with lots of power, sporty handling, and sleek looks. It’s six figures from the get-go, though, and while there’s a backseat it’s not really usable. The SL earns a TCC Rating of 6.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

The big news for 2024 is the addition of the monstrous AMG SL 63 E Performance plug-in hybrid model. It teams the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 from the SL 63 with a 194-hp electric motor on the rear axle for a total of 805 hp and a small electric driving range. Otherwise, 2024 SLs get an AMG crest above the grille, and add three new exterior colors and two new interior color combinations.

The new top-line model joins an SL 43 base model that was added mid-2023, as well as SL 55 and SL 63 models. All sport a low-slung, wide, and rounded take on the classic long hood, short deck proportions of a sports car. It’s a 2+2 but it still looks like a roadster with the top up because the soft top hides the small rear seat. With several layers of cloth and a glass rear window, the top seals off the interior well, blocking out sound for the luxury experience Mercedes buyers expect.

The cabin is roomy for two and very snug for anyone who might venture into the back seat. The dash has a rounded look like the fenders. A pair of digital screens provide infotainment and driving information, and some available two-tone cabin colors brighten the ambience.

The engines start with a 375-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 that makes the SL quick. The step up is a twin-turbo V-8 that produces either 469 or 577 hp and contributes mightily to the big horsepower number of the SL 63 S E Performance.

All SLs have sharp moves, but an available linked hydraulic suspension fights body lean to improve the car’s agility. Available rear-wheel steering also makes it more stable during fast cornering.

Mercedes makes plenty of safety features standard but leaves a few important ones, such as adaptive cruise control and active lane control, as options. Among the standard features are automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, automatic parking, and a surround-view camera system.

How much does the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class cost?

The SL 43, added in the middle of 2023, brings the starting price to about $110,000, and the addition of the SL 63 S E Performance likely pushes the price past $200,000. Go for a V-8 and the excellent hydraulic suspension, and expect to pay about $150,000.

Where is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL-Class made?

In Germany.
