MG Motor India is gearing up to introduce the Cyberster electric sportscar in India, with an official showcase scheduled for March 20 in Mumbai. MG Motor will also discuss its future plans for the Indian market at this event. While the launch of the Cyberster is still some time away, MG is contemplating introducing it under a premium brand, similar to Toyota-Lexus, or through a new premium retail channel similar to Maruti Suzuki’s Arena and Nexa dealerships.
The Cyberster marks MG’s entry into the electric sportscar segment, with international sales planned to commence in the summer of 2024. Featuring a potent dual-motor setup, it delivers up to 535 Bhp of peak power and 725 Nm of peak torque. The car can do 0-100 kph in just 3.2 seconds. With a 77 kWh battery pack, the Cyberster promises a maximum range of 580km on a single charge.
MG Motor will also offer a single-motor RWD variant of the Cyberster, which will come with a 64-kWh battery pack. The single motor setup will pump out 308 Bhp and provide a total range of 520 km. The dual-motor variant weighs close to 1,985 kg, and the single-motor version weighs somewhere around 1,850 kg.
The Cyberster was first showcased as a concept in 2021 and made its debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Talking of dimensions, the Cyberster, built on a pure electric skateboard platform, measures 4,533 mm in length, 1,912 mm in width, and 1,328 mm in height, and comes with a wheelbase of 2,689mm.
The MG Cyberster has a sleek new design and an open top. Its design is inspired by MG’s sporting heritage. The front of the car features swept-back headlights and a bumper with multiple air intakes. The car’s unique design features include petal-like alloy wheels, a fabric soft-top, and scissor doors.
The car’s side profile has smooth surfaces, a pronounced rear end, and side skirts. The door handles are neatly integrated into the car’s body line that goes from the A-pillar to the rear. The back of the vehicle has arrow-shaped taillights, a rectangular light bar, and a split diffuser.
Inside, the car has a flat-bottomed steering wheel with buttons and three digital screens for infotainment and driving data. The centre console features another screen and buttons for the roof mechanism, drive selector, and HVAC.
The Cyberster is positioned to be an “affordable” sportscar, with an anticipated starting price of around Rs. 60 lakh, making it an attractive proposition for enthusiasts. Price-wise, the car will compete with famous players in the segment, such as the KIA EV6, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the just-launched BYD Seal.
The introduction of Cyberster aligns with MG’s broader strategy in the Indian market, which is backed by its recent partnership with JSW Group. Through its partnership with JSW, MG may be eligible for the Indian government’s new electric vehicle policy, which permits new investors who invest over $500 million in the EV sector to import a limited number of cars at a reduced customs duty rate. This tax benefit could help MG launch their cars, like the Cyberster, at a much lower price.
